As I reflect on the 2010’s, I realized I did a lot of creative and justice work, and I moved a lot, which has meant that not all those parts of my life are connected. So here’s what I was doing in the 2010s:

In 2013, I co-founded and launched Sophia’s Pockets with the awesome, globetrotting Jenni Taylor. Over the next 4 years, I wrote poem/prayers about community, ones that were funny, and ones that encourage me even today. I published the work of incarcerated folks, a fascinating series on modesty, and folks writing form war zones. I also got to collaborate, and maybe mentor a little, the awesome Nermine as a writing intern, and the amazing Will who wrote, among other things, this great reflection exercise which I found just in time for the new year.

In 2013, I also started a writing project called, My Life as Herbst, which documented my time living in Germany.

In 2015, I started what would eventually become the Alternative Justices Project with the awesome Zarinah and a ton of other collaborators within the Embassy Network and beyond.

In 2017, I started writing and creating Outlaw Futures, which is fiction for the resistance. This then became an art piece that was one of so many great pieces at the Post 11/9 The New Now [Now] show that I launched in Chicago with the amazing Asya.

In 2018, I started hosting and coordinating Relationship Anarchy Support Circle in the East Bay for folks trying to live out or experiment with, the values of Relationship Anarchy. (START YOUR OWN WHERE YOU LIVE!!!)

I also documented some work on relationships and community I’ve done in since 2018, including the popular Relationship Questions for Everyone, Giving and Receiving Care in Community, and Ways to Request Support (which lives on the fridge at our house).

So here’s to the 2010’s and the 2020’s. May they continue to bring transformation, inspiration, and creativity.
